A Brief History
of Cincinnati
& Hamilton
County, Ohio
Hamilton County was
formed in 1790 as an
original county. The City
of Cincinnati serves as
the county seat. The first
County Courthouse was
built in 1795. The County Courthouse has experienced several fires. The fires
occurred in 1802, 1813, 1814, 1849 and 1884. Numerous records were lost. After
each fire, a notice was published for thebenefit of any person wishing to have
their documents and court records restored. Basedon this, the records prior to
1884 have been reconstructed but they are not all intact. Somewere restored,
some reconstructed from affidavits, some copied from the originals, andsome
records were actually salvaged. Results will vary considerably if searching
forrecords prior to 1884. The present County Courthouse was built in 1886 with
a finaladdition being completed in 1918.
